MISSION

Engaging communities, families, and individuals in outdoor experiences to achieve healthier lifestyles and sustain Florida's natural resources.

'Time in nature is not leisure time; it's an essential investment in our children's health'.
- Richard Louv, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder

The health of our children

Childhood obesity rates have tripled since 1980, and today some 12.5 million American children are obese. The CDC reports that as of 2010, 25% of Florida's population is obese. Obesity is the root of some of the leading causes of preventable death including: heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

Sedentary lifestyle is a major contributor to obesity, and outdoor activities offer much in the way of curbing sedentary patterns in children that will carry on into adulthood.

Physical activity in adulthood begins in childhood!

Evidence shows that outdoor nature play reduces obesity rates in children.

Become a Nature Champion!

Developed with funding from the Tallahassee Coalition for Childhood Obesity Prevention and Education, (COPE) and Florida Blue Foundation, the Nature Champions training program is certified by the Medical Educational Council of Pensacola (MECOP) for two Continuing Medical Education points (physicians need 40 points every two years) and is available online through the Florida Department of Health at fl.train.org key words: Nature Champions or Course ID: 1056430.

Prescription pads and resource materials are available to physicians upon request to info@getoutdoorsflorida.org.
