Engaging communities, families, and individuals in outdoor experiences to achieve healthier lifestyles and sustain Florida's natural resources.

Get Outdoors Florida! is the collaboration between statewide partners in both the public and private sector confronting the need to reconnect communities, families, and individuals with nature in an effort to improve whole health. Additionally, the partnerships of Get Outdoors Florida! increase opportunities for greater environmental education, public health, child welfare, increased tourism, fish and wildlife conservation, and ongoing land management.

Childhood obesity rates have tripled since 1980, and today some 12.5 million American children are obese. The CDC reports that as of 2010, 25% of Florida's population is obese. Obesity is the root of some of the leading causes of preventable death including: heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
Sedentary lifestyle is a major contributor to obesity, and outdoor activities offer much in the way of curbing sedentary patterns in children that will carry on into adulthood.
Evidence shows that outdoor nature play reduces obesity rates in children. We are proud to announce that through a COPE grant, Get Outdoors Florida! has created Florida's first training tool in prescribing outdoor experiences as a means to wellness. Designed for physicians, this training module will present the data and the ways in which physicians may make recommendations to patients on how they can better their lives and whole health through outdoor experiences.
